The Smithsonian’s National Zoo announced the birth this week of an Asian elephant—an endangered species. The female calf was born on Groundhog Day at 1:15 a.m. to 12-year-old mother Nhi Linh and 44-year-old father Spike.
A fossil discovered in Texas four decades ago has sat unexamined in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, until now. The 270-million (ish) year-old amphibian fossil has finally been described and named, Kermitops gratus, after beloved Muppet, Kermit the Frog.
The smallest, and probably the rarest, rabbit in the world is on its last legs in the Pacific Northwest. The Columbia Basin pygmy rabbit thrived for thousands of years in the sagebrush steppe of what is now central Washington, but massive habitat loss has pushed the species to the brink of extinction.
