A small group of lions have left their traditional stomping grounds in the Namibian desert and have found new life – and plenty of seals to eat – on the country’s Atlantic coast. The 12 lucky lions now prowling the Skeleton Coast are part of a population of maybe 80 stuck in the Namib Desert which features massive sand dunes and the weird Welwitschia plant which can live for 2000 years.
Here’s an idea for getting humans involved in helping other species: sell them attractive bracelets that come with the ability to track a real animal in the wild using an app. That idea has been realized by Fahlo, the brainchild of co-founders Carter Forbes and D.J. Gunter.
A fifteen-year-old lion named Ruben lived in solitary misery for years in an abandoned zoo in Armenia. The “world’s loneliest lion” has found freedom at last in a South Africa sanctuary. After the private zoo in Armenia shut down, all its animals found new homes except for one, according to the animal-rescue group Animal Defenders International. Ruben spent five years in a small concrete cell, alone, as his health deteriorated due to malnutrition and lack of exercise.
